Porto-Vecchio: a dream weekend in South Corsica

Porto-Vecchio, perched between the Corsican mountains and the emerald waters of the Mediterranean, is an enchanting destination in southern Corsica. With its heavenly beaches, historic heritage and unspoilt nature, this small port town has everything to seduce travellers in search of an escape. Whether you're a fan of idleness, a history buff or a keen hiker, Porto-Vecchio is the perfect place for a weekend away from it all.

The best time to go

Porto-Vecchio is best explored between May and October. Spring offers pleasant temperatures, perfect for exploring nature without the summer crowds. Summer is very busy, with sunny days ideal for enjoying beaches such as Palombaggia and Santa Giulia, but be prepared for the crowds. September and October are quieter, so you can enjoy the Corsican way of life without the crowds.

Day 1: Citadel, historic centre and dream beaches

Morning: stroll through the old town

Start your visit by strolling through the picturesque narrow streets of Porto-Vecchio's old town. Dominated by its 16th-century Genoese citadel, the upper town offers a warm atmosphere with its stone houses, small squares and craft shops. Stop for a coffee in the Place de la République, then explore the ramparts for superb views of the gulf and saltworks below.

Afternoon: relax on the beach at Palombaggia

After lunch on the terrace, drive to Palombaggia beach, one of the most beautiful in Corsica, just 20 minutes away. Its crystal-clear waters, white sand lined with umbrella pines and red rocks make it a real picture-postcard setting. Ideal for an afternoon's swimming, paddle-boarding or simply soaking up the sun.

Day 2: Nature excursion and secret coves

Morning: walk in the Alta Rocca and the Ospedale forest

On your second day, set off to discover the hinterland. Just 30 minutes from Porto-Vecchio, the Ospedale forest awaits you for a refreshing hike. The path leading to the Piscia di Gallo waterfall is one of the most popular: a 1? hour walk takes you through a forest of laricio pines before reaching an impressive waterfall. The panorama over the gulf is breathtaking.

Afternoon: Santa Giulia coves or boat trip

Treat yourself to an afternoon on the beach at Santa Giulia, another pearl of southern Corsica, with its shallow waters perfect for a relaxing swim. You can also opt for a boat trip to discover the coves accessible only by sea, or even to the Cerbicale islands to observe the marine fauna.

Where to dine and have a drink?

Porto-Vecchio is full of gourmet addresses to enhance your evenings. For a refined dinner with a view, head to Le Belvédère, an elegant restaurant nestling in the hills, serving Mediterranean cuisine enhanced by Corsican produce. Another popular address is Terramea, in the old town, which combines tradition and creativity in a warm, chic setting.

For a more relaxed atmosphere, try A Casa Corsa, a typical trattoria serving local charcuterie, fiadone and figatellu. On the seafront, Le Patio is a delight with its homemade tapas and terrace overlooking the harbour.

As for the bars, the festive Corsican atmosphere is on show with open-air DJ sets in several of the region's establishments. For a quieter moment, U Spuntinu, in the old town, offers a fine list of Corsican wines to accompany generous platters.

Why choose Porto-Vecchio?

With its Caribbean-style beaches, charming historic centre, mountain scenery and local specialities, Porto-Vecchio offers a complete immersion in the Corsican art of living. Just 30 minutes from Figari airport, it's an easily accessible destination for a sunny weekend away.
